San Francisco is one the largest natural harbours in the world and was first known to Europeans by a Spanish scouting party in 1769. In 1775 a Spanish ship, the San Carlos, was the first to anchor inside the harbour. The port was still only known locally until 1851 when the discovery of gold brought many visitors to San Francisco, followed by the discovery of silver in 1859.
