In the early 1700s the Port of Montreal was a popular base for traders and explorers. By the end of the 18th Century, it was a settlement with thriving communities. The shipping service eventually began in 1853, linking Montreal to Europe. Cities and towns began to appear on the Port’s borders in the early 1900s and gained recognition as a major World Centre after the opening of Expo 67.
