Singapore lies at the tip of the island of the Malay Peninsula. Singapore merged with Sabah, Sarawak and Malaya to form Malaysia in 1963. However, two years later, it became an independent republic and joined the United Nations. Since gaining independence, The Port of Singapore has grown considerably in areas such as financial services, and tourism.
