Settlers first reached Port Melbourne in 1839 where they established its first jetty. Originally given the name of Sandridge, it was officially renamed Port Melbourne in 1884. The port thrived in the 1850s when the Victorian gold rush brought many new settlers and Australia’s first rail line constructed one of its first stations there. Station Pier was a major entry point for new people entering the country.
